As you can imagine cheerleading is a sport which has a lot of homophobic stigma attached to it. This why KUCS have said goodbye to their white regulation shoe laces and opted for Stonewall’s rainbow laces instead.
Stonewall’s rainbow lace campaign hopes to raise awareness for homophobia in sport by encouraging sports teams up and down the country to buy and wear rainbow laces to sporting events.
Of course, winning national championship status in rainbow laces wasn’t enough for us. We decided to get creative and made our very own rainbow pyramid to show our support for the LGBT community.
Well, it is nice to take a break from training hard and have a bit of fun for a good cause!

March 22nd saw Kingston Cougars take on their second competition of the year: ICC’s British Open and University Nationals Cheer and Dance Championships.
The competition was held at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham. However, the early start did not deter the Cougars from arriving in plenty of time to support the Surrey Starlets in their bid for worlds.
Both teams competed to the best of their abilities giving absolutely fantastic performances. Blues took home 5th place in the University Level 1 All-Girl category and Golds placed 1st in the University Unlimited Co-ed Level 3 category. This incredible result for Golds means that not only are they national champions but they have received a bid to The European Summit.
With an extremely generous donation from ICC towards the Cougar’s CF fundraising it really was a great day all round.
Well done Blues and Golds!

The Kingston Cougars had a great time at the Surrey Starlets annual showcase; this year, as well as having Blues & Golds perform, we also had two group stunts show off their routines; Level 2 All Girl Sunglow & Level 3 Coed Supernova. All 4 teams pulled off great performances!
We are so happy to announce that the Surrey Starlets 9th Annual Showcase raised a massive £1500 for charity. The money will be split evenly between #smileforhatti charity and Cancer Research UK. That’s £750 for each charity.
Us Cougars are delighted that we could help out such a worthwhile cause. We all had a really fun day at the showcase. It was great to watch some higher level teams perform. Thank you to everyone that came along for your support.
Thanks for having us, Starlets, see you again next year!

Once a year, every single one of the Kingston Cougars sports teams bus over to Surrey University and compete against their sports teams. Our Coed team competes against their coed team in cheerleading, and we have an unbroken winning streak!
A few members of the team were unwell, but luckily we had some alumni step in and stand in for those unable to perform! A huge thank you to them, and it was great to see some old faces back at Varsity!
We had a great time watching other sports compete, and supporting them - cheering from the sidelines! We even had two of our teammates, Sophia & Ru, working at the event as a photographer & assistant respectively. It was a great day with all the other sports at Kingston University, and while the Kingston Cougars as a whole didn't win, we were still winners in cheerleading! See you next year Surrey Stags & Angels.

This year Kingston Cougars are aiming to stamp out homophobia in Kingston Uni, and join the national campaign.
February is LGBT History Month, and as you probably know, homophobia can be a real issue in sport: “More than six in ten (63 per cent) gay and bisexual men and four in ten (38 per cent) lesbians and bisexual women expect to experience homophobia if they took part in team sport and were open about their sexual orientation.” (Stonewall, see link below).
Therefore, to show our support for the LGBT community and LGBT people in sport, on Wednesday 25th February and Wednesday 4th March is going to be Kingston Cougars (Sport) vs.Homophobia day's, and It would be great if as many people as possible could wear the Rainbow laces those days.
The KUSU Sports Office on Penhryn Road Campus (above the Space Bar SU), has lots of pairs of rainbow laces for only £3.00, and will be selling them during office hours (Mon-Fri, 10am-4pm). So let’s get as many people as possible to wear the laces and show our support!

Varsity is the day that teams of Kingston Cougars take on Surrey Stags in 27 different sports including cheerleading! There is also a Tug of War that takes place at the end of the day. Last year’s event took place on the 2nd of April at Surrey Sports Park and despite losing 61-13; we put on a united front and did Kingston proud! Kingston Cougars cheerleading beat the Surrey Angels last year, and we hope to do it again.
Matches take place throughout the day, and our very own team photographer will be taking photographs all day. She will be joined by another member of the team, and they will be taking photographs of the spectators with props so be sure to find them.
Check out the highlights from last year below:

Kingston Cougars decided to spend Valentines Day together this year, at the Future Cheer University Nationals in Birmingham!
Despite a delay due to traffic, both teams did really well at the competition. Both teams placed 3rd; Blues came 3rd out of 10 teams and Golds came 3rd out of 13 teams. We are incredibly proud to be in the top 3 in both categories! The competition was fierce, and we are definitely working hard to place even higher at the next competition.

It was an amazing day, and we met some old friends and made new friends with other teams. It was a great experience for those on the team who were new to cheerleading! Unfortunately, Kent University was unable to come due to being involved in accident on the motorway. We missed seeing them at competition and hope to see them at the next one.
The videos of our routines are available to see on our Facebook page:
